Sleep, Revive and Thrive

Sleep is crucial for maintaining good health physically, mentally and phsycologically. In this blog I have mentioned everything you need to know about improving the quality sleep and regain vital energy.

One who has control over his mind and thoughts, he can sleep anywhere, anytime. For example, Mahatma Gandhi could fall sleep whenever he wished.
It should be remembered that three hours Deep sleep gives more rest than eight hours shallow sleep.
Napoleon used to sleep only three hours during night. But he fell in deep sleep  when he went to bed.
In deep sleep, a living person appears like a dead body or like a new born baby. There are no dreams in deep sleep. The energy which was spent during waking period is regained during deep sleep. During deep sleep the rate of breathing and pulse slow down and blood supply to brain is reduced. One who is in deep sleep loses sense of hearing and touch.

Some Measures to fall in Deep Sleep

1) One must do some exercise regularly
One who does hard physical labour falls in deep sleep, but a lazy person is unable to have sound sleep.

2) Declutter your mind before hitting the bed
One should vacate his mind of all worries of the world. Take a diary and write ✍🏻 down everything bubbling in your head. A happy person falls asleep easily.

When one has dinner before Sunset, his digestive activity is completed by the time he goes to sleep. This helps in bringing deep sleep. One doesn't have good sleep if he has empty stomach or if he has over eaten. One should not have the habit of drinking milk before sleeping.

4) One should maintain good hygiene
Wash your hands, feet, mouth and your private part with cold water. Ease yourself, wear comfortable and breathable clothes. This will bring deep sleep.

5) One should sleep in solitude
The place where one sleeps should be clean and the bed should not be too springy. One should sleep in solitude and complete darkness to have deep sleep.

6) One should maintain the right posture
In what posture one sleeps has a great effect on the quality of sleep. It is observed that if one sleeps on his back doesn't get deep sleep and has dreams. It is very bad to sleep on the back with arms on the chest because many activities of the body do not go on properly. The blood flow slows down and the body becomes weak. One may have cold, epilepsy and pain in stomach by sleeping on the back.
The best posture of sleeping is to lie down on left side. Then the wind pipe remains straight. Those who have heart problems may not sleep on left side but on right side. When one sleeps on right side there is pressure on liver, which hinders it's activity and has the problem of reduced hunger. In this case one should sleep on his belly and his head should be rested on a pillow either on left or right side.

7) Gently combing hair
If one gently combs hair of a person who is lying on bed, it helps to bring deep sleep.

8) Listen to good music or read a book
It is helpful to have deep sleep if one concentrates on something like good music or if he reads a good book.

9) Simply walking
One should walk in the veranda or the compound till he feels sleepy. One should not think about any problem while walking but should relax his mind.

10) Simple breathing technique
While lying on bed, one should gently inhale and exhale deeply several times with mantra chanting "Soham".

11) Soaking feet in warm water
Before going to bed the feet should be kept in warm water. This moves blood from head to feet and induces sound sleep.

12) Sleeping naked
One also has good sleep if he bath in cold water and wraps warm cloth on his body. The clothes one wears while sleeping should be light. It is best to sleep naked.

13) Choose the right pillow
Head should be rested on a pillow so that it is raised and too much blood doesn't go to head.

14) Avoid tea, coffee, tobacco
One should avoid anger, hatred, too much food, too much hard work, disease, tea, coffee, tobacco, noise and light in the room to have good sleep. They are enemies of sleep

15) Never take Medicine to have sleep.

16) Bedroom should be big and airy
We spend 2/3rd of our lives at the place where we sleep. Therefore, it should be clean, fairly big and should have enough windows so that light and fresh air enter the room. It is a great mistake to close the doors and windows of the room. By doing so the proportion of oxygen is reduced in the air of the room and the proportion of harmful gases is increased. And when one wakes up, instead of feeling energetic, one feels depressed.

17) Direction of placing the head
Markande Smriti says that if head is kept towards East and South, one has long life and has more wealth. If the head is points towards West, he is harassed by worries and if his head points towards North his viral force if depleted. Therefore, one should never sleep with head towards North and feets towards South.

18) It is harmful to Sleep on soft matress
It is harmful especially for growing children if they sleep on soft beds, their chest doesn't expand as much as it should and the spinal column is not straight. By sleeping on ground or hard bed the spinal column remains straight and the organs of chest and belly are able to function properly. Breathing is also deep.

19) It is best to sleep on ground
Scientists are of the view that it is best to sleep on ground. Contact with earth gives viral force. Earth has miraculous power to cure diseases. Ram, Sita and Lakshmana during their 14 years of "exile", used to sleep on earth which gave them strength to destroy Ravan.

20) Time of sleep
I feel it is natural and best to sleep from sunset to sunrise. By following this principle there has been remarkable improvement in my health and Beauty.
